In The Margins

This is a new and special library collection, designed just for teens!  We want you to write in theses books! Find the special collection in the Teen Lounge at the Channahon Library.  Check out a book, take it home, & read it.  While you're reading, make your mark to add to the story.  Love something a character said?  Underline it and write your own comment in the margin!  Something made you laugh?  Draw a laughing emoji!  Make your mark in the margins, between lines, inside covers, or other blank areas of the book or even add your own pages or post-it notes.  

In the Margins books are available for check-out in the Channahon Library Teen Lounge. Borrow them like any other book -- experience them like no other!

    • Why do you want us to write in the book?

      It's fun!  People have been writing in the margins of their books for centuries.  It actually has it's own name, marginalia.  Marginalia is notes or embellishments, like drawings or commentary, in the blank areas of a book.  When you write or draw in the margins, the next person that uses the book can see your thoughts or artwork and add to it.  It becomes a type of old-school social media when lots of people participate.

    • What should I write?

      Just about anything that strikes your fancy!  Did you see a quote you loved or a reference to a song you know?  Circle it!  Leave a comment saying why you like it, draw a heart, or whatever you like. 

      Please do not destroy someone else's comments or artwork.  You can respond to comments already made and add to artwork, but do not scribble over or mark out someone else's additions. 

      Please refrain from adding inappropriate drawings, racist comments, or anything that could be interpreted as hate speech.  This collection is meant to promote a positive experience for everyone that tries it.  You are welcome to express your opinions, but please do so in a way that allows everyone to continue to enjoy the conversations.

    • Can I use any book from the library?

      You can only write in the books that are specially labeled as being part of our In the Margins collection.  You can find these in the Teen Lounge at the Channahon Library.
